For the love of Printmaking.
After taking a break from the process to explore other techniques, ideas and methods, I’ve fallen back in love with linocut printing. This new collection is all about celebrating that passion. There’s something so satisfying about carving into the linoleum block, feeling each cut, and just getting lost in the process. It’s almost meditative.
Plus, the bold lines and high contrast of linocut prints have such a unique look. Planning out the compositions and working in reverse can be tricky, but that’s part of the fun. It pushes me to be creative and think outside the box. This collection is a tribute to my renewed love for linocut printing and all the joy it brings me.
Printmaking is often an unforgiving process. Each line carved cannot be uncarved, if you make a mistake, you need to learn to live with it. Your fingers can ache from carving, especially on intricate pieces and your eyes will burn as you carve each interlocking line and motif.
When it comes to inking, it often takes up to twenty test prints to get it just right. The studio is thick with the smell of oil based ink and every surface is covered in paper as you strive to get it just right, and watch out for inky finger tips! just one wrong move can ruin a print.
Then comes the printing itself, the creak of the press as you pray to the printing Gods for even coverage, the blisters on the sole of your hand and tips of your fingers from burnishing the back of the paper for that perfect print!
Even with all that, for me, printmaking has become an obsession. Over the past nine months I have lived and breathed the process, when I go to sleep I dream of new pieces and carving finer lines. I am incredibly excited to share this new collection with you all, and cannot wait to hear your feedback.
